About this Sidequest

Forager is a Math Rock band that I had initially discovered through listening to NPR's Tiny Desk concerts. I regularly listen to NPR's tiny desk as a way to find out about new or small musicians and as a way to try different flavors and genres of music. One thing led to another and I had pre-ordered the vinyl of their new album, which features songs that I like such as "Haiku Nursury Rhym", "Leave a little to the imigination," and their most famous song "Pomeranian."
What I didn't know is that by pre-ordering their vinyl, I had been entered into a raffle for a set of free tickets. I ended up winning one but all the locations nearby (in the Northeast) where on days that I couldn't make, and the only available one was in Richmond Virginia.

What the heck, never been, I like the band, we'll call it an adventure.

What to do and where to go?

When you end up in a new city, in a new state, without looking up anything about either... how do you decide what to do? Luckily for you, and me (especially) I have this really simple technique for finding things. I don't believe in looking things up unless necessessary, my mantra is that those who know things will tell you, but you do need to seek those people out. Here's how I start; locate the nearest antique/vintage store, cafe or record store, and find the person with the most tattoo's and or piercings. 9/10 times they know some cool things to do; so far this method hasn't failed me and led me to check out many thrift stores, a cafe or two, and their ICA before making it to the show.

Stopping for food

To make sure my list of places and things to do didn't expire, I would keep asking people at the places I visited to recommend me a few more things; one of the places that got recommended more than once was this bar/restaurant called 821. I stopped here to get some lunch and a beer (obviously) before making my way to the museum of fine arts - which was gorgeous with a park ended up reading and napping before moving closer to the music venue.

The Camel

After having a picnic in the park at another spot recommended by people met throughout the day, I end up at the venu; The Camel. Yes... the cigarette brand. The venue reminded me of 924 Gilman, with its wide room, with graffitti and stickers on the wall and couches in the back.

The band came on and it was even better in person, and the lead singer had great stage prescense. After the show I chatted briefly with someone next to me, mainly because they had a robot to watch their cat, and I couldn't not ask to learn about their cat.

Did I go back to the motel afterwards to sleep for 4 hours before catching a flight back... yes, I absolutley did and I would do it again.
